Course content

This level is for students who already feel comfortable talking about everyday life in the present, but avoid telling stories because they are not sure how to use past-tense verbs. Level 3 focuses on preterite. You learn how to recognize past-tense verbs when other people speak and how to use them when talking about your own experiences.

Throughout this level, you will learn:

      • How to talk about completed events in the past.
      • How to describe personal experiences and tell simple stories about what happened.
      • How to conjugate regular verbs and some of the most common irregular verbs in the preterite.
      • How to recognize common preterite forms when listening to Spanish.
      • How to use time expressions such as ayer, la semana pasada and el mes pasado to place events in the past.
      • How to talk about past appointments, trips and other everyday activities.
      • How to apply our pronunciation technique while speaking in the preterite.

What happens after Level 3?

Level 3 is an important milestone because you can now communicate about both present and past tense.

At this point, many students are ready to join our weekly Conversation Club on Zoom, where they begin practicing everything they have learned in real conversations with other students.

Level 4 continues building on that foundation. Instead of introducing another major verb tense, it focuses on making your Spanish more natural by learning how object pronouns work in everyday conversations. You’ll also continue strengthening your understanding of past tenses as you use longer and more detailed sentence structures.

Level 4 is already included with your Toani Membership, so you can continue whenever you’re ready.
