The verb ‘Necesitar’

Necesitar means “to need”. It is used as a main verb to express things you need to do. Now, necesitar is in the full form (in grammar it’s called the ‘infinitive’ form), meaning no one is doing the action. You’ve probably read or studied that all verbs in Spanish end in -AR, ER, or IR. If you drop the ending of the verb and add new ones, then the ending of the new forms indicates who’s doing the action. This verb transformation is known as conjugation. The conjugation of ‘necesitar’ in the present tense is as follows:

Personal pronouns (I, you, he, she, etc.) in Spanish can be left out because the ending of each verb form indicates who’s doing the action. In this course, we’re going to focus on three forms first so you can master how to pronounce them and use in a sentence. In the exercises and quizzes, we’ll work with ‘necesito’, ‘necesitas’ and ‘necesitamos’. At the end of this course, there is an introduction on how to conjugate all verbs in the present tense. But, for now, all you need is the conjugation of the main verb, followed by a second verb in the full form.

The sentence structure is as follows: Main verb + second verb (action) in the full form + place and/or timeframe words

Necesito viajar a México pronto.I need to travel to Mexico soon.
